For the longest time we’ve bought romaine hearts in plastic bags from Trader Joes. A super-simple substitute, however, is to buy them sans packaging elsewhere. No plastic packaging for our lettuce anymore! We bought a heart of romaine that was not packaged in plastic, and after washing it, we dried it with dish towels (rather than paper towels). Small wins.
